I’m finally getting better and haven’t had a fever like that 104 degree temperature I made it up to Tuesday night, so I thought I’d take advantage of my time at home, and post a few pictures.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">Here is a skyline shot from the wedding night of Amy’s friends Mark and Lizzy. There are tons of cool places to check out. Unfortunately that Saturday it was pouring, so we didn’t get to as much as we would have liked. My main interest that day was checking out <a href="http://www.thehighline.org"> the High Line </a>, one of the coolest industrial remnants in the city running along <st1:street><st1:address>9th Ave.</st1:address></st1:Street> Although we weren’t able to actually go on it, a gallery space along the route near <st1:street><st1:address>15th Street</st1:address></st1:Street> held a lecture and afforded us this view.<o:p></o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/89603261/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/39/89603261_8fa4e7e0a8_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="2005.10.08_0003_lowres" /></a></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">I was a little upset that I couldn’t get a shot free of reflection, but then I decided to play around with it some</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/89603264/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/14/89603264_656fc79b8c_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="2005.10.08_0013_lowres" /></a></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">Remnants of a pier along the <st1:city><st1:place>Hudson</st1:place></st1:City>.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/89603269/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/25/89603269_e9de6a455e_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="2005.10.08_0018_lowres" /></a></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">The following day we went way uptown to the High Bridge Water Tower. I wanted to revisit some of the great coaster parks while we both still could – and we brought along Jason, my roommate, friend, and fellow coaster buff to boot. </p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">I don’t have any pictures of our second stop, Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, because I didn’t want to take my camera inside while riding the rides, but these are from our first stop King’s Island near Cincinnati, Ohio. </p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">Here’s Jay tooling around in the Mystery Machine. </p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/89603223/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/11/89603223_0a79717824_o.jpg" alt="2005.09.03_0007_lowres" height="533" width="800" /></a></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">One of the less desirable aspects of King’s Dominion is their ties to Paramount Pictures films and other licensed product placement. I didn’t mind the Scooby-Doo ride in the Hanna Barbara-themed kiddie park, but major rides based upon long-forgotten actioners like Face Off and Gone in 60 Seconds got to be a bit much. We ate lunch at a Bubba Gump shrimp place.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">Far more desirable are the coasters. And here’s the main attraction – Son of Beast, the world’s only looping wooden roller coaster. It truly is a monster and an amazing ride.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/89603229/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/31/89603229_67fa33ae97_o.jpg" alt="2005.09.03_0032_lowres" height="533" width="800" /></a></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">The sharp circular banks are a coaster feature unique to Son of Beast and its still-active predecessor The Beast, which is the world’s longest wooden coaster </p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">Looking at it you wouldn’t think you’d pick up much speed on one of these banks, but you really move through that curve something fierce.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/89603234/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/39/89603234_a5db00b0f0_o.jpg" alt="2005.09.03_0080_lowres" height="533" width="800" /></a></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">Here’s the big hill of the Racer. Again, you wouldn’t think a wooden racing coaster with a mid-size hill would be that much of a thrill, but if you look carefully you’ll notice the Blue Train is running backwards. All of the g-forces and ups and down you’d normally expect to experience on a wooden coaster are thrown all out of whack. It’s truly disorienting and makes for a fantastic ride.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/89603241/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/15/89603241_2b6fd96328_o.jpg" alt="2005.09.03_0095_lowres" height="533" width="800" /></a></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">King’s <st1:place>Island</st1:place> is extremely well-maintained – just a nice park to visit. Here’s the centerpiece of the place, a faux <st1:place><st1:placename>Eiffel</st1:placename> <st1:placetype>Tower</st1:placetype></st1:place> with an observation deck.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/89603259/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/27/89603259_764b867bea_o.jpg" alt="2005.09.03_0108_lowres" height="800" width="509" /></a></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">The day we were at King’s <st1:place>Island</st1:place>, there was a cheerleading competition going on. I’m finally posting a select few. <o:p></o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style=""><u1:p>Here’s a shot of the <st1:city><st1:place><st1:city><st1:place>Austin</st1:place></st1:City></st1:place></st1:City> power plant, which was next to this tiny art gallery, outside of which Amy and I randomly bumped into Shauna Bittle, one of my old roommates. Poor Charles, Amy’s pumpkin got the rot and had to be tossed before the party. I’m working on fixing that. My good friend Matt Boggie is going to help me set up a proper web site to display my pictures. This blog will eventually shuffle over to that site and hopefully be a means up updating everyone when a bunch of photos are available to look at, not just the scattered handful I have here. We’ll see how that all goes. </p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">In the meantime. I’m getting rather annoyed by this complete and utter lack of snow in our area. There have been no sledding opportunities whatsoever. I’m hoping that by posting some festive holiday shots, I can encourage the weather to be more in my favor. </p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal">These are pictures of Amy’s tree. The all-blue lighting was inspired by my dad who told us the story of how he convinced my mom to put up an all-blue tree their first year of marriage, but never since. You can see the train he provided racing around the track in some of these.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/86410373/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/6/86410373_c30a4a9272_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="2005.11.28_0060_lowres" /></a></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/86410399/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/38/86410399_15c0a2ef78_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="2005.11.28_0068_lowres" /></a></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/86410433/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/9/86410433_a95314d765_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="2005.11.28_0073_lowres" /></a></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/86410388/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/42/86410388_7c281add14_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="2005.11.28_0065_lowres" /></a></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>Mark D Beazleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04005179977012223736noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13532159.post-1131081573875824262005-11-04T00:19:00.000-05:002005-11-04T00:19:33.890-05:00Rising From the Ashes<p class="MsoNormal" style="">Hey all,<o:p></o:p></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="">Terribly sorry I’ve been remiss in posting new photos. I’m truly sorry I didn’t convince myself otherwise. All of my fireworks shots have the wavy lights – signs of my inability to hold a camera completely steady for the seconds you need to get the shot properly. After the show was done, I set my camera on the edge of the rooftop and snapped this skyline view.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/24033098/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://photos18.flickr.com/24033098_ef4927c356_o.jpg" width="800" height="533" alt="2005.07.04_NY_Skyline" /></a><br /><br />Next time, I promise…Mark D Beazleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04005179977012223736noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13532159.post-1120402324159392702005-07-03T10:51:00.000-04:002005-07-03T10:52:04.163-04:00What happens in Vegas stays in VegasIn celebration of Independence Day, here are some shots from last year’s 4th: my trip to Las Vegas and California– in retrospect not the best of vacations, but it did offer up these daytime shots of Old Vegas which is off the beaten path from the current Strip. The exhibit is no longer up, so I thought I’d post the picture that was on display for those who missed it.<br />“Celebrate Brooklyn in 3-D” is from a few years back when they were showing The Creature From the Black Lagoon in 3-D at the Prospect Park bandshell. I turned around to see everyone on the lawn behind us and was smitten by the image of everyone staring intently with their glasses on. I agreed, but only if she in turn let me play with my camera and take pictures of her while she was doing it. The results are some of my better portrait shots.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/22297591/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://photos16.flickr.com/22297591_792d9aa393_o.jpg" width="522" height="800" alt="Pedicure-1" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/22297592/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://photos15.flickr.com/22297592_83b74b5866_o.jpg" width="522" height="800" alt="Pedicure-2" /></a>Mark D Beazleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04005179977012223736noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13532159.post-1119828726006667232005-06-27T00:01:00.000-04:002005-06-26T19:32:06.010-04:00Bacon & Friends<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/21760785/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://photos15.flickr.com/21760785_310e1457af_o.jpg" width="577" height="600" alt="Bacon & Friends" /></a><br /><br />I recently learned that the father of my good friend Beth Haas passed away last week after a prolonged illness. Next to Keyspan Park is the lot where the abandoned Thunderbolt roller coaster once stood. I had heard it was being made into a Parking lot, but it seems to be still completely overrun save for this structure where the police appear to stable their horses:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/21698573/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://photos15.flickr.com/21698573_22b96dd577_o.jpg" width="533" height="800" alt="2005_Mermaid-Parade_0920" /></a><br /><br />And finally, my favorite picture I’ve ever taken of the parade. This is from 2000 or 2001 and is the upper portion of a man’s costume where he’s dressed himself as the parachute drop with dangling Barbies in mermaid outfits.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/21698569/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://photos15.flickr.com/21698569_65a0f24028_o.jpg" width="532" height="800" alt="2001_Mermaid Parade" /></a><br /><br />Here’s a shot for comparison taken this year:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/21701168/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://photos16.flickr.com/21701168_0eeed1e9fd_o.jpg" width="533" height="800" alt="2005_Mermaid-Parade_0924" /></a><br /><br /> Next up…Texas!Mark D Beazleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04005179977012223736noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13532159.post-1119443257854719912005-06-22T08:27:00.000-04:002005-06-22T08:27:37.856-04:00I appreciate your supportI want to thank everyone who made it to the show opening last night. It was exciting to be able to share that experience with everyone. I’m working on getting stuff from my trip, but I have to resize the files still and haven’t had a chance to do so yet. Until then, here’s Bethesda Fountain in Central Park:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/18770032/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://photos15.flickr.com/18770032_d2f1c30cd2_o.jpg" width="583" height="872" alt="Central Park - Fountain" /></a>Mark D Beazleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04005179977012223736noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13532159.post-1119356039789195692005-06-21T08:13:00.000-04:002005-06-21T08:13:59.793-04:00Reminder about the exhibitHey all,<br />I’m back in New York, no worse for the wear – though my luggage has gone AWOL. Just wanted to remind everyone about the show tonight. See all the pertinent information here:<br /><a href="http://bigtoephotography.blogspot.com/2005/06/my-work-on-display-at-national-arts.html">http://bigtoephotography.blogspot.com/2005/06/my-work-on-display-at-national-arts.html</a><br /><br />To tide you over until I get a chance to sort through all the great pictures I took on my trip and post a select few, here’s a shot of last year’s Mermaid Parade out in Coney Island, which is coming up this weekend. This little girl was rockin’ and boppin’ along to any music that paraded by. I highly recommend you check out the Mardi Gras of Brooklyn:<br /><a href="http://www.coneyisland.com/mermaid.shtml">http://www.coneyisland.com/mermaid.shtml</a><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/18305311/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://photos12.flickr.com/18305311_ff21e25c6c_o.jpg" width="800" height="548" alt="Mermaid-Parade 2004" /></a>Mark D Beazleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04005179977012223736noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13532159.post-1118805095432656342005-06-15T00:01:00.000-04:002005-06-16T11:45:55.110-04:00And now for something completely different...People, or rather a person -- me. Wanted to let you know of an upcoming event where one of my photographs will be on display as part of an exhibit dedicated to portraiture. My piece is called "Celebrate Brooklyn in 3-D." Here is the information from the National Arts Club's site (nationalartsclub.org):<br /><br />6/20-6/29 in the Grand Gallery: "PORTRAITURE"--the Jr. Committee's exhibition featuring 20 portrait artists working in all mediums including sound and literature. This exhibition celebrates the NAC's commendation by the Portrait Society of America for outstanding commitment to Art Education. Opening reception: 6/21 at 8:30 p.m.<br /><br />The National Arts Club is located at 15 Gramercy Park South (20th Street) between Park and Irving Place, on the southwest corner of Gramercy Park.<br /><br /><br />Info about the Tuesday night party, which I'll be attending immediately after the Marvel/DC softball game:<br />The Chairs of the Junior Committee of the National Arts Club have been hard at work producing the party. There will be live performances, plenty of booze and food and people. The party is open to everyone so feel free to invite whomever but please note that the NAC asks "all gentlemen to wear jackets and ties"<br /><br />I hope you all can make it to the show.<br /><br />MarkMark D Beazleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04005179977012223736noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13532159.post-1118536714338809652005-06-11T20:31:00.000-04:002005-06-11T20:40:44.256-04:00Lions in Winter: Patience snowed in<a title="Photo Sharing" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/16785250@N00/18770030/"><img height="570" alt="Lions In Winter 001" src="http://photos12.flickr.com/18770030_71d4fdf9ba_o.jpg" width="863" /></a><br /><br />Another Bryant Park shot from one of my favorite sets of pictures. In early 2003 we had a blizzard that started Sunday night and went all through Monday. I called in "sick" and went sledding.
